Cancer Awareness
CMMB is leveraging its trusted faith- and community-based partners in Uganda to provide a comprehensive cancer prevention, treatment and care program for patients seeking oncology services at the Uganda Cancer Institute.
Our goal is to decrease morbidity and mortality due to treatable cancers to patients seeking care and treatment at the Uganda Cancer Institute. The program will build on CMMB’s current partnership with the Uganda Ministry of Health and the Uganda Cancer Institute and its successful Healing Help Medical Donations program, which secures and donates medicines and medical supplies to countries globally.
With medicines donated by Hospira, the global specialty pharmaceutical and medical delivery company, and syringes provided by BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), the proposed program will reach out to patients, some of whom may be reticent to access oncology services due to the high cost of screening and treatment. Specifically, the program will:
- Provide oncology medicines for the treatment of approximately 9,000 patients
In addition, CMMB and the National Cancer Coalition (NCC), together, are working to secure additional oncology medicines for Uganda.
CMMB has launched a new cervical cancer prevention initiative. In Honduras, CMMB is working with its in-country representative and two in-country partners (Liga Contra el Cancer and Hospital Santo Hermano Pedro) to help distribute 86,400 doses of vaccine to 28,800 girls. In Ghana, CMMB is working with an in-country NGO partner, RUWIDE, to distribute 96,000 doses of vaccine to 32,000 girls. Vaccine administration will commence in Honduras in March 2012 and later this year in Ghana. The vaccine is administered in three doses during a six-month period. Local healthcare teams will be trained in administering the program, including community outreach and education, Behavior Change Communication (BCC), counseling, parental consent processes, adverse effect management, and monitoring and evaluation.
