Building on the Spirit of Service
Tusaidiane is inspired by CMMB’s successful Medical Volunteer Program. Our founder, Dr. Paluel Flagg, was CMMB’s first volunteer. His work in Haiti began in 1912, when he traveled there from New York support people living with leprosy. Continuing his legacy, CMMB placed 73 long-term and 475 short-term volunteers in 27 countries around the world in 2009. In addition to placing medical volunteers, CMMB strives to foster the development of human resources for health in the countries where we work.
In Action: Kenya
Tusaidiane, meaning ‘let us help one another’ in Kiswahili, places licensed healthcare professionals at faith-based healthcare facilities in Kenya. The Tusaidiane concept was to create a national program, rather than one dependent on American and Canadian volunteers. CMMB is implementing a pilot program, targeting Kenyan nationals who have been professionally trained in various medical disciplines or in areas of expertise and knowledge that support health programs. Service corps members devote themselves to helping those most in need for periods ranging from a few months to a few years.
